About the Department of Pharmacology
The Department of Pharmacology is committed to excellence in medical education, research, and promotion of rational and safe use of medicines. The department plays a vital role in training undergraduate and postgraduate medical students by providing a strong foundation in pharmacological principles and their clinical applications.
The teaching programme is competency-based and aligned with the National Medical Commission (NMC) curriculum. Through interactive lectures, practical sessions, small-group discussions, case-based learning, and simulation-based training, students develop clinical reasoning, prescribing skills, and knowledge required for safe and evidence-based patient care.
The department actively promotes research and innovation by encouraging faculty and students to participate in scientific activities aimed at advancing pharmacotherapy and improving healthcare outcomes. Regular CME programmes, workshops, seminars, journal clubs, and faculty development activities are conducted to promote academic excellence and lifelong learning.
The Department functions as an Adverse Drug Reaction Monitoring Centre (AMC) under the Pharmacovigilance Programme of India (PvPI). The programme focuses on monitoring, detection, assessment, and prevention of adverse drug reactions (ADRs) to ensure safe and rational medicine use. Healthcare professionals are encouraged to report suspected ADRs, contributing towards improved patient safety at the national level.
Daily ward rounds are conducted for systematic identification and documentation of suspected ADRs. After detailed causality assessment, validated reports are submitted electronically through the VigiFlow system to the National Coordination Centre, Ghaziabad.
The department also houses the Institutional Ethics Committee (IEC), responsible for ethical review, approval, and monitoring of biomedical and health research conducted within the institution. The committee ensures that all human research activities comply with guidelines issued by ICMR, NMC, and other national and international ethical regulations.
With a strong commitment towards academic excellence, ethical research, pharmacovigilance, and patient safety, the Department of Pharmacology strives to develop competent, compassionate, and socially responsible healthcare professionals equipped to meet the evolving needs of modern medicine.

Future Directions
- Expansion of Pharmacovigilance Activities:
Improving adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting, conducting awareness programmes, and strengthening medication safety initiatives in collaboration with various clinical departments. - Establishment of Drug Information Centre (DIC):
Providing unbiased, evidence-based, and up-to-date drug information to healthcare professionals to promote rational prescribing and improve patient care. - Establishment of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring (TDM) Service:
Facilitating individualized drug therapy by monitoring serum drug concentrations, optimizing therapeutic efficacy, and minimizing drug toxicity.
