About Forensic Department
This is a pioneer department to start post graduate course in forensic medicine in Maharashtra in the year 1981. Dr A. C Mohanty Sir is the pioneer of forensic medicine and toxicology department IGGMC Nagpur.
At that time post graduate degree of this department was the only MCI recognized degree in IGGMC Nagpur.
At present 60 to 70 percent Head of the Departments of forensic medicine of various medical colleges in Maharashtra including present head of the department are students of this department.
Till today 50 to 60 post graduate students have passed out from this department.
Vision Statement of The Department
Department is aiming to start the project to give time since death which is medicolegally very important. Our Department will be unique and first in the country to start this initiative.
Development of full-fledged histopathology lab in the department.
Establishment of a 24 hours clinical Forensic Medicine unit in casualty of college.
As department is having 50 to 60 seating capacity viewing balcony for autopsy examination. Department is aiming to conduct various workshops for police personals to help them in criminal investigation which may help to impart justice.
Similarly Department is aiming to conduct various workshops for public prosecutors to help them to present the case before the Honourable court which may help to impart justice.
Department is aiming to conduct various workshops for registered medical practitioners to prevent medical negligence and also allegations of medical negligence.
Department is aiming to conduct induction training of medical officers of public health department which will improve the quality of medico legal work and medico legal reports at the remote periphery.
Department is planning to start Medicolegal Institute which includes Forensic Science Laboratory, Histopathology, Biochemistry so that all medicolegal investigation will be done under one roof.
Infrastructure – State of the art ERP System
A web based ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning Software) for all medico legal reports which includes autopsy report, model PM report, age estimation report, physical examination of sexual assault accused report, sexual assault victim examination report, death certificate, form no 4 and 8, viscera forms, histopathology form has been implemented in year 2018. This forensic medicine ERP software is developed by Dr M.S Vyawahare Professor and Head . It is working satisfactorily till date. It includes 15 all in one personal computer, 10 all in one printers, four laser printers. It is equipped with LAN connectivity WIFI facility and 2 back up servers.
It is the only centre in India which has this ERP forensic medicine software. Every autopsy surgeon has his own personal ID and Password. Benefits of this facility is that any doctor cannot see or edit other doctor’s Medicolegal report, so that the confidentiality required is maintained.
At present it is working in good condition. Other benefits of ERP software are as follows-
- Viscera form, Histopathology form, Provisional post-mortem report and Death certificate can be submitted immediately.
- Post-mortem report can be submitted in the department within 24 hours.
- Soft copy of all medico legal documents can be preserved and can be retrieved whenever required.
- Detail data analysis of total daily, monthly, yearly cases is possible, also types of cases that is accidental, suicidal, homicidal can be segregated and data analysis of any parameters can be easily done in a very short time which is highly beneficial for research.

Infrastructure – Other Resources
- Lecture hall with 250 student seating capacity with fully air conditioned and audio-visual aids as per NMC norms constructed in 2019. It is the only 250 student seating capacity lecture hall in IGGMC Nagpur. it is because of this lecture hall, college got sanctioned of 200 MBBS admissions.

2. In the year 2017 department had no cold storage, in working condition. The animal house attached to the department was taken from pharmacology department with due procedure and cold storage complex was constructed in 2019

3. Three Cold storage cabinets with each having 6 cadaver capacity has been installed in 2020. At present it is working in good condition.

4.The existing mourner shed was extended. The new extension of mourner shed is 12 meter x 6 meter with attached toilet and water facilities for relatives of deceased. It is constructed in year 2020.

CONSTRUCTION OF NEW MORTURY COMPLEX
As per Hon. Bombay high court Nagpur bench PIL no 17/2011, Mortuary Upgradation was essential. As No space was available for stand-by mortuary and routine medicolegal Postmortem examination should continue, It was decided to do the upgradation in Two phases. New mortuary complex construction phase one was started in 2020 after completing all administrative approvals. Mortuary upgradation phase one is now completed and fully functioning from february 2024. It consist of the following things.
- Routine autopsy hall of size 1750 sqft area and 24ft height with four fully equipped autopsy tables. Having viewing balcony at 12ft height with seating capacity of 50 to 60 students with a video capturing system for observing autopsy procedure which is unique in India.
- Walk in cold room for preserving 20 cadavers.
- Antemortem examination room for Examination of accused of sexual offence, Examination of Victim of sexual assault, Age estimation cases.
- Mortuary complex is equipped with 15 CCTV camera for close monitoring.
- Demonstration/lecture hall with 50 persons seating capacity, with fully airconditioned and audio visual aids.
- X-ray room.

- A dedicated public address system with microphone and speakers to notify the relatives and police regarding the status of the autopsy.

- Room for Embalming of the bodies whose PM is done in the department.
- Dedicated cold storage for Decomposed bodies.

- Phase 1 and Phase 2 of new mortuary complex will be interconnected with each other
- Construction of phase 2 has been started which will be completed by 2025..
