In Indian medical, nursing, and healthcare education, Bridge Courses are short-term training programs designed to upgrade skills, bridge curriculum gaps, or transition healthcare professionals into primary care roles.

1. Primary Healthcare Bridge Course: Certificate in Community Health (CCH / BPCCHN)

The most prominent bridge course under the National Health Mission (NHM) and Ayushman Bharat scheme:

  • Course Name: Certificate Programme in Community Health (CCH / BPCCHN).
  • Offered By: IGNOU in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and State Health Societies (including DMER / NHM Maharashtra).
  • Duration: 6 Months (Includes theory & practical clinical rotations at District Hospitals).
  • Eligible Candidates:
    • Staff Nurses (GNM or B.Sc. Nursing graduates).
    • AYUSH Practitioners (BAMS - Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery).
  • Objective: Trains nurses and BAMS doctors in basic diagnostics, essential primary drug care, maternal-child health, and public health management.
  • Career Role: On successful completion, candidates are deployed as Community Health Officers (CHOs) or Mid-Level Health Providers (MLHPs) at Health & Wellness Centers (Sub-Centres/PHCs).

2. Post-Basic Academic Bridge Courses

Other educational transition options in the healthcare sector include:

Target Audience Bridge Course Purpose / Outcome
GNM Diploma Nurses Post-Basic B.Sc. Nursing (2 Years) Upgrades a 3-year GNM diploma to a full 4-year degree equivalent for academic and career advancement.
BPMT / Paramedics Post-Diploma Skill Upgradation Short workshops/certifications to transition between sub-specialties (e.g., General Lab Tech to Dialysis or Critical Care Tech).

3. The AYUSH-to-Allopathy Bridge Course Proposal (Historical Context)

  • Background: A proposal was introduced under the National Medical Commission (NMC) Bill to allow AYUSH (Ayurveda/Homeopathy) practitioners to prescribe basic allopathic medicines after completing a designated bridge course.
  • Current Status: The central NMC bill removed this blanket clause, leaving individual state governments to regulate or limit pharmacology cross-practice under specific public health programs (such as the CHO/NHM scheme).
