- Dr. Poonam Gajbhiye, 3rd year resident of Department of Ophthalmology, received 1st prize in Best Slogan Contest organized on the occasion of Glaucoma Awareness Rally by Ophthalmological Society of Nagpur (OSN).
- Optometrists won 2nd prize in Skit Competition organized by OSN on the occasion of Eye Donation Fortnight.
Departmental Events / Camps
- Participated in “Namo Netra Sanjeevani Abhiyan” initiated by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi from 17th September to 2nd October.
- A total of 136 cataract screening camps and 26 SEARCH camps were conducted for early detection under the “Namo Netra Sanjeevani Abhiyan”. Patients identified were successfully operated.
- Organized school awareness camps and various poster-making competitions on the occasion of Eye Donation Fortnight.

About the Department of Ophthalmology
The Department of Ophthalmology at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital (IGGMC), Nagpur
is a comprehensive ophthalmic care and academic unit committed to providing accessible,
affordable and quality eye care to the community. The department caters to a wide spectrum
of ocular disorders, ranging from routine eye problems and refractive errors to complex
cataract, corneal, glaucoma, squint, retinal and oculoplastic conditions.
The department provides comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic ophthalmic services,
including cataract surgery by phacoemulsification and SICS, squint evaluation and surgery,
amblyopia management, diabetic retinopathy screening and treatment, intravitreal injections,
ICL implantation, DCT and DCR, pterygium surgery, corneo-scleral tear repair, intraocular
foreign body management, ocular surface foreign body removal, entropion surgery and ptosis
surgery, among other specialized procedures.
A Strong Residency Training Programme
The department places strong emphasis on developing competent, confident and independently
capable ophthalmologists through a structured and comprehensive residency programme.
Postgraduate residents are exposed to a diverse and substantial clinical workload,
allowing them to develop strong skills in patient evaluation, diagnosis, investigation,
medical management and surgical decision-making.
Residents receive progressive hands-on exposure to ophthalmic procedures and surgeries
under the guidance of experienced faculty. The training encompasses cataract surgery,
emergency ophthalmic care, trauma management, lacrimal procedures, oculoplastic procedures,
squint evaluation and surgery, corneal and ocular surface disorders, diabetic retinopathy
and other medical and surgical ophthalmic conditions.
The residency programme places equal importance on clinical training, surgical skills
and academics. Regular academic activities, case discussions, seminars, journal clubs,
clinical presentations and teaching sessions encourage residents to develop sound
clinical reasoning and remain updated with advances in ophthalmology. Residents are
also encouraged to participate in conferences, workshops, research and departmental
academic activities.
The department aims to provide an environment where residents progressively transition
from supervised clinical learning to greater responsibility and surgical independence.
The combination of high patient exposure, hands-on surgical training, structured academics,
faculty guidance and community-oriented ophthalmic work makes residency in the department
a valuable foundation for a successful career in ophthalmology.
Community Outreach and Preventing Avoidable Blindness
A major focus of the department is to reduce the burden of avoidable blindness through
active community outreach. Residents and faculty regularly participate in peripheral eye
camps for refraction services and cataract screening, identifying patients who require
further evaluation and treatment.
Patients diagnosed with operable cataract through these camps are brought to
IGGMC, Nagpur, where they receive cataract surgery free of cost,
ensuring that financial constraints do not become a barrier to sight-restoring treatment.
The department has conducted numerous outreach activities over the years, including
large-scale cataract screening and community eye-care initiatives. A notable example
was the mega cataract camp conducted in 2022, during which
250 patients underwent cataract surgery at IGGMC, Nagpur, within two days
without complications.

Alongside patient care and community outreach, the department remains committed to
undergraduate and postgraduate education, surgical skill development, research and
continuing medical education. Specialized academic initiatives and hands-on workshops
further strengthen the learning environment for residents and faculty.

WORK ON DACRYOCYSTORHINOSTOMY (DCR) WITH HANDS-ON CADAVERIC DISSECTION
Activities and Events
A) Hands-on Cadaveric DCR Workshop
The Department of Ophthalmology successfully conducted a
hands-on cadaveric Dacryocystorhinostomy (DCR) workshop,
providing participants with valuable practical exposure to the surgical
technique.
The workshop offered an interactive learning experience, enabling participants
to understand, practice, and refine the key steps of DCR surgery under expert
guidance.
B) Eye Donation Awareness Initiative
On the occasion of Eye Donation Fortnight, the residents of
the Department of Ophthalmology created informative and
engaging awareness videos in Hindi and Marathi to educate
the public about the importance of eye donation.
Through these videos, the residents aimed to dispel common myths, encourage
informed conversations, and inspire people to consider eye donation as a
noble act that can help restore the gift of sight to those in need.

Departmental Achievements
- Dr. Poonam Gajbhiye, 3rd Year Resident, Department of Ophthalmology,
received the 1st Prize in the Best Slogan Contest
organized on the occasion of the Glaucoma Awareness Rally by the
Ophthalmological Society of Nagpur (OSN). - Department Optometrists won the 2nd Prize in the
Skit Competition organized by the
Ophthalmological Society of Nagpur (OSN) on the occasion of
Eye Donation Fortnight.
Non-Academic Achievement
- Participated in and coordinated two major projects under the
“Namo Netra Sanjeevani Abhiyan”:- Successful completion of 5,000 cataract surgeries
at IGGMC. - Successful completion of 10,000 cataract surgeries
across 11 districts of Maharashtra (Vidarbha Region).
- Successful completion of 5,000 cataract surgeries
Departmental Events / Camps
- Participated in the “Namo Netra Sanjeevani Abhiyan”
launched by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi
from 17 September to 2 October. - A total of 136 Cataract Screening Camps and
26 SEARCH Camps were conducted for the early detection
of eye diseases under the “Namo Netra Sanjeevani Abhiyan”.
Eligible patients were screened and operated upon accordingly. - Organized school awareness camps and various
poster-making competitions on the occasion of
Eye Donation Fortnight to promote awareness about
eye donation.

Department Awareness & Eye Donation Campaign
The Department of Ophthalmology, IGGMC Nagpur actively
observes Eye Donation Fortnight every year to create
awareness about the importance of eye donation and corneal
transplantation. Faculty members, residents, interns, and students
organize various awareness activities including public education,
rallies, pledge campaigns, exhibitions, and interactive sessions to
encourage voluntary eye donation.
The department also conducts awareness programs in hospitals,
educational institutions, and community settings to educate people
about the benefits of eye donation and the procedure for donating
eyes after death. These initiatives play a significant role in reducing
corneal blindness and promoting the noble cause of eye donation.
Through these continuous awareness activities, the Department remains
committed to spreading the message that “Eye Donation is the
Gift of Sight.”
Mega Cataract Camp – 2022
A landmark Mega Cataract Surgery Camp was conducted in
2022, where an impressive 250 patients
underwent cataract surgery at IGGMC Nagpur within just
two days, with no complications reported.
The camp was further enriched by the presence and active participation of
renowned ophthalmic surgeons Dr. T. P. Lahane and
Dr. Ragini Parekh, who attended the camp and performed
surgeries alongside the department team.
This successful initiative stands as a testament to the department’s
commitment to high-volume, safe, accessible, and completely free cataract
care, while working towards the shared goal of eliminating avoidable
blindness.
