The guest speakers introduced students to NIRMAN and SEARCH (Society for Education, Action and Research in Community Health), Gadchiroli, founded by Dr. Abhay Bang and Dr. Rani Bang. They highlighted the importance of youth involvement in addressing community health challenges.
Workshop Awareness and Student Participation
The speakers also informed students about an upcoming workshop organised by NIRMAN and encouraged interested students to apply and participate to gain valuable exposure to community health initiatives and social responsibility.
Alongside the session, a book fair was organised, providing students with an opportunity to explore books and enhance their learning experience.
Overall, the programme was informative, interactive, and enriching. The cooperative participation of the guests and students contributed to the success of the event, inspiring students to contribute towards community health and social welfare.
🌿 World Suicide Prevention Day – 10th September 2026 🌿
World Suicide Prevention Day was observed at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College, Nagpur, as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations, under the able guidance of our respected Dean, Dr. Ravi Chavan Sir.
The programme was conducted in the gracious presence of Vice Dean Dr. Gopal Agarwal Sir, Dr. Archana Deshpande Madam, Dr. Jeevan Vedi Sir, and the faculty members of the Department of Psychiatry.
On this occasion, awareness posters on suicide prevention were unveiled and displayed at various locations accessible to students. The initiative focused on creating awareness about early warning signs, ways to respond and support a person in distress, available resources, and emergency helpline details.
The initiative aims to encourage students to recognise distress early, seek help without hesitation, and extend support to those who may be struggling.

In an inspiring initiative aimed at promoting knowledge, intellectual growth and the habit of reading among young minds, NIRMAN, an organisation dedicated to the growth and development of the youth of India, has organised a Book Fair at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMC), Nagpur.
The Book Fair has created an excellent opportunity for students, faculty members and book enthusiasts to explore a diverse collection of books across various fields of interest. The fair features books on medical sciences, competitive examinations, self-development, fiction, biographies, general knowledge and many other subjects, offering something valuable for every reader.
In today's fast-paced digital world, where students are increasingly surrounded by screens and technology, the Book Fair serves as a meaningful initiative to encourage the timeless habit of reading. Reading not only enhances knowledge but also stimulates curiosity, improves critical thinking and inspires individuals to explore new ideas and perspectives.
Students are encouraged to take a break from their routine academic activities and visit the Book Fair to discover books that can become a source of knowledge, motivation and lifelong inspiration. Beyond textbooks, books provide an opportunity to understand the world, learn from the experiences of great personalities and develop a broader outlook towards life.
The initiative by NIRMAN has been appreciated as a positive step towards nurturing a culture of learning and intellectual engagement among the youth. Health Check-up & Surgical Camps – Shri Mahalakshmi Jagdamba Sansthan, Koradi
Shri Mahalakshmi Jagdamba Sansthan, Koradi, organized six free health check-up and surgical camps for citizens from rural and economically weaker sections under the guidance of Shri Chandrashekhar Bawankule.
A total of 15,019 beneficiaries received medical services, with 520 surgeries successfully performed, including cataract, orthopaedic, cardiac and other procedures.
The camps were conducted with the support of IGGMC Nagpur, Government Medical College, Government Dental College & Hospital, Nagpur, District Health Authorities and participating hospitals, with the aim of bringing quality healthcare services closer to rural communities.
A Mega Health Camp on the Occasion of the Hon’ble Chief Minister’s Birthday
A Mega Health Camp was organised by the Government of Maharashtra on the occasion of the birthday of the Honourable Chief Minister. Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital, Nagpur, actively participated in the camp and provided comprehensive healthcare services to the beneficiaries. A total of 16,217 patients were examined during the camp.

Organ Donation Awareness Campaign
A. Awareness Program for Nursing Students
On 3rd August 2026, as a part of the Organ Donation Awareness Campaign, the Department of Anaesthesiology and Critical Care, IGGMCH, Nagpur, under the guidance of Dr. Vaishali Shelgaonkar, Head of the Department of Anaesthesiology, conducted an Awareness Program for nursing students and staff of IGGMC at the Nursing Lecture Hall. Dr. Parag Sabale, Associate Professor, Department of Anaesthesiology, delivered a lecture on the Need for Organ Donation. A total of 110 nursing students and staff members attended the program.
B. Rally for Organ Donation Awareness
IGGMC team of Anaesthesia Residents, Operation theatre BPMT students, under leadership of Dr.Pranay Mallela participated in Rally for awareness of Organ Donation. It was from Variety Square to RBI Square on the Occasion of National Organ Donation day.
NATIONAL WORKSHOP ON HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT (DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY MEDICINE)

Background: The Department of Community Medicine, Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital, Nagpur, organized a three-day National Workshop on Healthcare Management from 10th to 12th August 2026 as part of the institution’s Diamond Jubilee Year celebrations. The chief guest of the inauguration was Dr. B.S. Garg. Our very own Dean and Patron for the workshop, Dr. Ravi Chavhan, graced the inauguration ceremony. The workshop was conducted in association with IAPSM Maharashtra Chapter. The enthusiastic participation of the delegates and interaction with experienced resource persons made the programme a meaningful academic initiative and a fitting part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

IGGMC Nagpur Begins Diamond Jubilee Celebrations with CME on Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Nagpur, August 27, 2026: The Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC), Nagpur, marked the beginning of its Diamond Jubilee Celebrations 2026–2027 with the successful organization of its first academic programme, a Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on “Gastroenterology and Hepatology.” The programme was organized by the Department of Medicine, IGGMC Nagpur, at the Lecture Hall, Administrative Building.
The CME marked an important milestone in the year-long Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the institution and brought together eminent specialists and faculty members for academic deliberations on contemporary and clinically important issues in gastroenterology and hepatology.
The programme featured three distinguished guest faculty from Nagpur. Dr. Vaibhav Banait, Gastroenterologist, delivered a comprehensive session on “Acute on Chronic Liver Failure (ACLF)”, highlighting the clinical recognition, precipitating factors, complications and principles of management of this challenging condition.
Dr. Amit Agrawal, Gastroenterologist, addressed the topic “Approach to Abnormal LFT and Approach to MASLD”, discussing a systematic approach to deranged liver function tests and the contemporary understanding and management of Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease (MASLD).
The third academic session was delivered by Dr. Rahul Saxena, Liver Transplant Surgeon, on “Liver Transplant: A Physician’s Perspective.” The session emphasized early identification and referral of patients requiring transplantation, selection of appropriate candidates and the important role of physicians in pre- and post-transplant care.
The CME also witnessed active participation from faculty members across various specialties, reflecting the multidisciplinary academic environment at IGGMC Nagpur. Dr. Munje, Professor and Head, Department of Pulmonary Medicine; Dr. Shelgaonkar, Professor and Head, Department of Anaesthesia; and Dr. Sonwane, Professor and Head, Department of Radiology, attended the programme and contributed to the academic interaction.
The programme was organized under the guidance of Dr. Ravi Chavan, Dean, IGGMC Nagpur; Dr. Archana Deshpande, Professor and Head, Department of Medicine; and Dr. Nitin Shende, Medical Superintendent, IGGMC Nagpur.
A special mention was made of Dr. Rakhee Joshi, Associate Professor, who played a key role in conceptualizing, coordinating and organizing the CME, contributing significantly to the successful conduct of the inaugural academic programme of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.
The programme also received active academic and organizational support from the Associate Professors of the Department of Medicine, Dr. Dipti Deshmukh, Dr. Tilottama Parate, Dr. Madhuri Pandhripande, Dr. Shobhana Bitey and Dr. Ashish Nimsarkar, who chaired the different sessions and participated in smooth execution and academic success of the event.
The CME provided an excellent platform for interaction between physicians, gastroenterologists, hepatologists, transplant specialists and faculty from other clinical departments. Discussions focused on practical approaches to complex liver and gastrointestinal disorders, with emphasis on early diagnosis, appropriate referral and multidisciplinary patient management.
The successful completion of this CME marked a fitting academic beginning to IGGMC Nagpur’s Diamond Jubilee year, reaffirming the institution’s longstanding commitment to medical education, professional development, multidisciplinary collaboration and excellence in patient care.
The Department of Medicine expressed its gratitude to the guest faculty, institutional leadership and all participating faculty members for their valuable contribution to making the first programme of the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations 2026–2027 a memorable academic occasion.

Department of Respiratory Medicine hosts academic programme as part of IGGMC's Diamond Jubilee Year Celebrations
Nagpur, 21 August 2026: A Continuing Medical Education (CME) programme on “Extra-pulmonary & Paediatric Tuberculosis – Strengthening Public–Private Coordination under NTEP for TB Elimination” was organised on 21 August 2026 at Hotel Centre Point, Nagpur, by the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital (IGGMC), Nagpur, in collaboration with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) under the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme (NTEP) and supported by the HLFPPT–SSHAKTI Project (Global Fund). The CME was organised as part of the Diamond Jubilee Year Celebrations of IGGMC Nagpur and was primarily aimed at private practitioners and healthcare professionals.
The programme was anchored and conducted by Dr. Sadaf Khateeb, Medical Officer–TB, IGGMC Nagpur, and Dr. Vinay Maheshwar, Medical Officer–TB, GMC Nagpur, who served as the Masters of Ceremony (MOCs). Their effective coordination facilitated the smooth conduct of the academic sessions and interactions throughout the programme.
The programme was attended by Dr. Deepak Selokar, Medical Officer of Health, Nagpur Municipal Corporation; Dr. Gopal Agrawal, Professor & Head, Department of Microbiology and Vice Dean, IGGMC Nagpur; Dr. Radha Munje, Professor & Head, Department of Respiratory Medicine, IGGMC Nagpur; Dr. Sushant Meshram, Professor & Head, Department of Respiratory Medicine, Government Medical College, Nagpur and Chairman, State Task Force (STF), Maharashtra; and Dr. Shilpa Jichkar, City TB Officer, Nagpur Municipal Corporation. The participation of senior academic faculty, public health officials, TB programme personnel, specialists and private practitioners highlighted the importance of multidisciplinary and public–private collaboration in the fight against tuberculosis.
The scientific programme commenced with Dr. Deepak Selokar, Medical Officer of Health, NMC Nagpur, delivering the opening remarks. Dr. Shilpa Jichkar, City TB Officer, NMC Nagpur, subsequently delivered a session on “NTEP General Overview”, providing an overview of the programme and highlighting the role of private practitioners in TB notification, diagnosis, referral and treatment linkage.
Dr. Sunita Gajbhiye, Professor, Department of Microbiology, GMC Nagpur, delivered a session on “Laboratory Perspectives on EP and Paediatric TB”, focusing on laboratory diagnosis and the challenges associated with obtaining appropriate specimens in extra-pulmonary and paediatric tuberculosis. The session was chaired by Dr. Sushant Meshram, Dr. S. N. Nimgade and Dr. Sanket Nandekar.
The next session, “Challenges and Solutions for EP Collection, Storage & Processing”, was delivered by Dr. Kishore Reddy, Technical Expert–Laboratory, HLFPPT. The session addressed practical issues related to specimen collection, storage, transportation and processing in extra-pulmonary tuberculosis and discussed approaches to improve diagnostic yield. Dr. Meena Mishra, Dr. Mohini Apte and Dr. Nitin Rathi chaired the session.
Dr. Manish Tiwari, Professor & Head, Department of Paediatrics, GMC Nagpur, addressed the important clinical differences between childhood and adult tuberculosis in his session titled “Paediatric vs Adult TB – A Food for Thought.” The session highlighted the distinctive clinical and diagnostic considerations in paediatric TB. The session was chaired by Dr. Gopal Agrawal, Dr. Sanjay Deotale and Dr. Niharika Lal.
A case-based academic session on “Abdominal TB – Case-Based Diagnostic & Therapeutic Challenges in EPTB” was conducted by Dr. Archana Deshpande, Professor & Head, Department of General Medicine, IGGMC Nagpur. The session focused on the diagnostic dilemmas and therapeutic challenges encountered in abdominal tuberculosis and emphasised the need for a high index of suspicion in patients with extra-pulmonary disease. Dr. Manik Gedam, Dr. Amol Samarth and Dr. Abhijit Deshmukh chaired the session.
Dr. Radha Munje, Professor & Head, Department of Respiratory Medicine, IGGMC Nagpur, delivered an engaging session titled “EPTB – A Great Mimic: Overview of Interesting Cases.” Through clinically relevant cases, the session highlighted the diverse manifestations of extra-pulmonary tuberculosis and the difficulties that may arise when EPTB mimics other diseases. The session was chaired by Dr. Aditya Parihar, Dr. Sanjay Jain and Dr. Tanuja Manohar.
The programme also addressed tuberculosis involving the female genital tract. Dr. Alka Patankar, Professor & Head, Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology, IGGMC Nagpur, delivered a session on “Tuberculosis in Female Genital Tract”, covering important clinical and diagnostic aspects of this relatively challenging form of extra-pulmonary TB. Dr. Rajesh Ballal, Dr. Sushma Deshmukh and Dr. Mangala Ghisad chaired the session.
The concluding scientific session was delivered by Dr. Gyanshankar Mishra, Associate Professor, Department of Respiratory Medicine, IGGMC Nagpur, on “DR-TB Case: Special References with EPTB.” The session discussed drug-resistant tuberculosis with particular reference to extra-pulmonary involvement and highlighted the complexities involved in diagnosis and management of such cases. Dr. Vinit Niranjane, Dr. Aakash Balki and Dr. Natique Parvez served as chairpersons for the session.
The CME provided an important platform for interaction between specialists, NTEP officials and private practitioners, with emphasis on early recognition of TB, appropriate diagnostic evaluation, timely notification, referral and linkage to treatment services. The discussions also highlighted the importance of strengthening public–private coordination, particularly for patients with extra-pulmonary and paediatric tuberculosis who may present with atypical clinical manifestations and pose diagnostic challenges.
The programme was particularly significant as it formed part of the Diamond Jubilee Year Celebrations of Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital, Nagpur. The initiative reflected the institution's continuing commitment to academic excellence, multidisciplinary learning, professional development and public health. By bringing together medical college faculty, municipal health authorities, NTEP personnel, laboratory experts and private practitioners, the programme reinforced the role of collaborative healthcare approaches in addressing major public health priorities.
The CME concluded with a Vote of Thanks, with appreciation expressed to the faculty, chairpersons, NMC–NTEP team, HLFPPT–SSHAKTI Project, participating private practitioners and all those involved in organising the programme. The initiative reaffirmed the commitment of IGGMC Nagpur and its collaborating partners towards strengthening TB care and contributing to the national goal of TB elimination.

West Zone ICS PG Talent Search 2026 Held at IGGMC Nagpur
The programme was inaugurated by Dr. Ravi Chavan, Dean, IGGMC Nagpur, and was attended by faculty members and postgraduate residents. A total of 26 postgraduate residents from different institutes within west zone participated in the competition, which included scientific and image/video-based sessions aimed at assessing academic knowledge, clinical reasoning and diagnostic skills.
The competition was judged by a distinguished panel comprising Dr. Vivek Gupta, Dr. Jitesh Atram, Dr. Nainesh Patel, Dr. Vikrant Deshmukh, Dr. Sameer Adwani, Dr. Dhiraj Bhatkar, Dr. Aditya Parihar, Dr. Parikshit Thakare, Dr. Rajesh Swarnakar, Dr. Avinash Gandhare and Dr. Sushant Meshram. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation and healthy academic interaction among postgraduate students from the West Zone.
Dr. Mehak Agrawal of Bombay Hospital, Mumbai, secured the first prize, while Dr. Ramkishore V. of AIIMS Raipur secured the second prize and Dr. Digambar Kanshette of IGGMC Nagpur secured the third prize in the West Zone PG Talent Search.
The event was conducted under the leadership of Dr. Radha Munje, Professor and Head, Department of Respiratory Medicine, IGGMC Nagpur, and Organising Chairperson, and Dr. Gyanshankar Mishra, Associate Professor, Department of Respiratory Medicine, IGGMC Nagpur, and Organising Secretary. The organising team members who contributed actively to the successful conduct of the event included Dr. Neha Pachbhai and Dr. Kapil Mate, Assistant Professors, and Dr. Aditi Singh and Dr. Shraddha Zodpe, Senior Residents, all from the Department of Respiratory Medicine, IGGMC Nagpur.

Background : The Department of Community Medicine, Indira Gandhi Government Medical College & Hospital, Nagpur, organized a three-day National Workshop on Healthcare Management from 10th to 12th August 2026 as part of the institution’s Diamond Jubilee Year celebrations. The chief guest of the inauguration was Dr. B.S. Garg. Our very own Dean and Patron for the workshop, Dr. Ravi Chavhan, graced the inauguration. The workshop was conducted in association with IAPSM Maharashtra Chapter. The workshop also marked the superannuation of Dr. Mohan Khamgaonkar, Professor and Head, Department of Community Medicine, making the occasion academically significant as well as a tribute to his dedicated service.
Programme: The workshop brought together healthcare professionals and delegates from different institutions for an interactive learning experience focused on contemporary healthcare management. The academic programme addressed healthcare leadership, strategic planning, first-contact care, healthcare operations, quality improvement, resource management and effective decision-making.
Learning Approach: The sessions combined expert talks with case-based discussions, team activities, participant presentations and recap sessions. Delegates were organized into hospital-based teams, encouraging collaboration, peer learning, problem-solving and exchange of institutional experiences. The overarching focus was on enabling participants to Envision, Empower and Evaluate healthcare systems and practices.
Outcome: The workshop provided participants with practical perspectives on strengthening healthcare delivery through effective leadership, efficient systems, teamwork and continuous evaluation. The enthusiastic participation of the delegates and interaction with experienced resource persons made the programme a meaningful academic initiative and a fitting part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations.

REPORT OF COMMUNITY HEALTH CAMP FOLLOWING CHLORINE GAS LEAK AT GODHANI
Background
Following the reported chlorine gas leak from the water treatment plant in the Godhani area, a community health camp was organized by the Department of Community Medicine, Indira Gandhi Government Medical College, Nagpur, to assess the health impact of the incident among the affected population.
Chlorine gas is a respiratory irritant, and exposure may result in symptoms such as irritation of the eyes and throat, cough, breathing difficulty, chest discomfort, and other respiratory complaints. Considering the potential health effects of chlorine exposure, a field-based assessment and medical screening of the affected population was undertaken. A rapid response team was formed with doctors from the Departments of Medicine, Respiratory Medicine, Anesthesia and Community Medicine.
Objectives
- To assess the health status of residents potentially exposed to chlorine gas.
- To identify individuals presenting with symptoms suggestive of chlorine exposure.
- To provide appropriate medical evaluation and first-line management.
- To identify individuals requiring referral to higher health facilities.
- To provide health education regarding precautions and measures to be taken following chlorine exposure.
Activities Conducted
- Registration and demographic data collection of individuals attending the camp.
- Assessment of history of exposure to the chlorine leak, including duration and proximity to the affected area.
- Assessment of presenting symptoms, particularly respiratory, ocular and mucosal symptoms.
- General clinical examination and vital-sign assessment.
- Respiratory assessment, including evaluation for cough, breathlessness, chest discomfort and other respiratory complaints.
- Examination for eye and throat irritation where indicated.
- Identification of individuals requiring further medical evaluation or referral.
- Provision of appropriate treatment and symptomatic management as required.
- Health education regarding chlorine exposure, warning symptoms and preventive measures.
- Advice regarding follow-up and seeking immediate medical attention in case of worsening symptoms.
Population Covered
A total of 29 individuals attended the camp.
Major Findings
Among the individuals screened, the following symptoms were assessed and documented:
- Cough
- Breathlessness
- Throat irritation
- Eye irritation/watering
- Chest tightness
- Headache/dizziness
- Other symptoms
A total of 29 individuals were identified as requiring medical treatment, while one child was advised further evaluation/referral.
Management and Referral
Individuals with mild symptoms were provided appropriate symptomatic management and health advice at the camp.
Individuals with significant respiratory symptoms, abnormal vital signs, persistent symptoms or other concerning clinical findings were advised/referred for further evaluation at an appropriate health facility.
Particular emphasis was placed on identifying individuals with breathing difficulty and other potentially serious manifestations requiring urgent medical attention.
Conclusion
The community health camp at Godhani was conducted as a public health response to the reported chlorine gas leak from the water treatment plant. The camp facilitated active identification of exposed individuals, assessment of symptoms, provision of medical care, referral of individuals requiring further evaluation, and community-level health education.
Continued surveillance and coordinated intersectoral action are recommended to ensure timely identification and management of any delayed health effects and to strengthen preparedness for similar environmental emergencies in the future.

World Health Day 2024 – Department of Dentistry
World Health Day was celebrated at IGGMC, Nagpur on 8th April
under the able guidance of our respected Dean, Dr. Ravi Chauhan.
Nursing staff and students were made aware of oral hygiene
maintenance practices, the role of systemic diseases in causing
oral diseases, and preventive measures.
The importance of diet modification in the prevention of dental
caries was discussed. Various dental treatment modalities were
explained and demonstrated through audio-visual methods.
Students were also made aware of the ill effects of tobacco,
including its association with oral precancer and cancer.
Information regarding postoperative oral hygiene care was also
provided. World Health Day pamphlets were distributed among
nursing staff and students.
