About Department
The Department of Surgery at Indira Gandhi Government Medical College (IGGMC)
is one of the premier clinical departments of the institution, dedicated to providing
comprehensive surgical care, quality medical education, and advanced clinical training.
The department plays a vital role in delivering tertiary healthcare services to the
population of Nagpur and neighboring regions.
The department is well equipped to manage a wide spectrum of surgical conditions, including
emergency and elective cases. It provides comprehensive care in General Surgery and offers
a broad range of specialized surgical services using modern diagnostic and therapeutic
techniques.
The department has expertise in advanced laparoscopic surgery, thoracic surgical procedures
including thoracotomy, complex soft tissue and lump resections, head and neck oncological
surgery with reconstructive procedures, gastrointestinal oncology, hepatopancreatobiliary
surgery and bariatric surgery. These services are delivered by experienced surgeons using
evidence-based protocols while maintaining the highest standards of patient safety and
ethical care.
The department is actively involved in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, imparting
theoretical knowledge, clinical skills, and hands-on surgical training. Regular academic
activities, including seminars, case discussions, journal clubs, and clinical meetings,
foster academic excellence and continuous learning.
In addition to patient care and teaching, the Department of Surgery at IGGMC
is actively engaged in clinical research and academic publications aimed at improving
surgical outcomes and advancing medical knowledge.
With a dedicated team of experienced faculty members, resident doctors, nursing personnel,
and supporting staff, the department strives to deliver high standards of healthcare
delivery, medical education, and research.

Our vision is to transform the Department of Surgery into a centre of
excellence by embracing advanced surgical technologies and expanding the scope of
specialized surgical care.
The department aims to establish a robotic surgery programme and
progressively develop Super-Specialty services. Through continuous advancement in
infrastructure, surgical expertise, research, and multidisciplinary collaboration,
we aspire to provide world-class care for complex surgical diseases.
Our goal is to further strengthen our position as a leading tertiary referral centre
for complex surgical care and a benchmark for surgical excellence in Central India.

| 2 | Breast Cancer Awareness and Felicitation of Breast Cancer Warriors was organized on 21/02/2024. Two staff nurses shared their experiences of fighting cancer and were felicitated. |
| 3 | A Breast Cancer Awareness and Detection Camp was conducted at Ramdham, Mansar, Nagpur on 29/10/2023. Around 200 people were educated about breast cancer, 100 women were examined, and 2 breast cancer cases were detected and counselled for further treatment.
